Prison reform should be at the top of DeSantis’ DOGE agenda

The op-ed below was published in the Sun-Sentinel on April 8, 2025.

Gov. Ron DeSantis recently revealed his vision for a Florida State Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE), a task force modeled on its federal namesake that would work to “further eliminate waste within state government, save taxpayers money, and ensure accountability in Florida.” As Florida’s largest state agency, the Department of Corrections (DOC) should be at the top of the governor’s list.

Due to Florida’s misguided “tough on crime” policies, DOC’s budget has ballooned over the years, and yet, the department continues to face budget constraints that hinder rehabilitation and contribute to an unsafe environment for staff and incarcerated individuals.

A deep examination of DOC would reveal that its longstanding issues are the result of lawmakers’ lukewarm attitude toward real solutions. From fiscal year (FY) 2014-15 to FY 2023-24, DOC’s budget grew by 42%, while the incarcerated population decreased by 13%. The state’s annual incarceration cost per person rose by roughly 85% during that same time. The major drivers of cost have been the state’s aging population, which requires more specialized medical and mental health services; high turnover rates, which have led to an inexperienced work staff and unsustainable overtime costs; and dilapidated infrastructure that is in critical need of repairs to the tune of $2.2 billion.
