How Would Repealing the ACA Affect Florida's Economy and Health Care?

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) recently released a report projecting the impact that a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would have on each state. The numbers for Florida are staggering:

  • 2,230,000 Floridians would lose coverage
  • The number of uninsured Floridians would increase by 90 percent (from 2,482,000 to 4,711,000)
  • 64,629 jobs in Florida would be lost, eliminating 7.6 out of every 1,000 jobs (in industries across the board)
  • Florida would lose $7.6 billion in federal health care dollars, or 0.49 percent of the state GDP

Repeal of the ACA would include a combination of tax cuts and spending cuts. Nationally, job growth would be reduced by almost 1.2 million in 2019.  According to the EPI report, this “is because the spending cuts would hurt job growth more than the tax cuts would help it.” Needy families would have to cut back on their spending, while tax cuts would disproportionately go to high income families who tend to save large portions of increased disposable income.

Bottom line: If millions of Floridians lose health care, families will have less money to spend on food and other necessities in grocery stores and other businesses and as a result, thousands of Florida jobs will be lost.

Repeal of the ACA would be terrible for Florida’s economy.
