Statement on House Passage of Reconciliation Bill

FPI released the statement below after the House passed the reconciliation bill.

The reconciliation bill passed by the House, part of the Trump administration and congressional leaders’ plan to gut health care and food assistance funding while providing tax cuts skewed to the wealthiest households, is an act of cruel disregard for the lives of millions of Americans. This bill will set us on a backward course: Floridians will lose health care coverage, families will lose their food assistance, and even more people in our state will be pushed into poverty.

This bill is now headed to the president’s desk for signature. That means Florida policymakers will have to make decisions about how to address the steep federal funding cuts. These choices include taking away SNAP and Medicaid benefits or eligibility from millions of Floridians, further eroding the quality of already underfunded public services, or raising revenue. Unfortunately, in past legislative decisions, state leaders have refused to raise revenue to fund public services.

Florida’s delegation in the House has opted to put the well-being of Florida adults and children in peril to provide an economic  boost to people who need it the least, a decision that will reverberate in all 67 counties.
