Statement on Florida House Amending HB 693, Preserving Health Care for Immigrant Children

STATEWIDE, Fla. - Florida Policy Institute (FPI) released the statement below from FPI CEO Sadaf Knight following the amendment of HB 693 by the Florida House Health and Human Services Committee:

"We are pleased that the Florida House has removed language in HB 693 that would have banned certain lawfully residing immigrant children from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid, which would have reversed a measure passed in the Florida Legislature with bipartisan support roughly a decade ago. Florida Policy Institute and Florida Health Justice Project provided analysis explaining that, if unamended, this bill language would have increased the number of uninsured children in our state unnecessarily, and that HR 1 did not call for it. We appreciate the willingness by the bill sponsor to amend the bill in order to preserve crucial health care access for Florida’s children. "

To that end, it is our hope that the state continues to make sound choices in CHIP and Medicaid. This includes amending other bills this session, such asSB 1758, which would institute harmful, and likely illegal, work-reporting requirements for the state’s Medicaid program. Furthermore, the state should continue to work towards the implementation of Florida’s KidCare expansion as AHCA has dropped its federal lawsuit against the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. There is no reason to make health care more difficult to obtain, and there is no reason to continue to delay policy that would improve health outcomes for Florida’s children."
