Statement from Florida Policy Institute on House Passage of HB 49

Florida Policy Institute (FPI) released the statement below after the House passed HB 49, legislation that would roll back child labor protections in Florida.

Thanks to the hard work of child advocacy groups in opposing HB 49, the legislation approved by the Florida House did not include some of the concerning provisions that were in the original version of the bill; however, even after being amended, the legislation would still allow employers to schedule 16- and 17-year-olds for unlimited hours, more than six days in a row, and without breaks — whether school is in session or not.

The companion bill, SB 1596, is still making its way through the committee process. We strongly urge the Senate to reject this legislation and protect Florida teens’ health, safety, and education.
