Senators Rubio and Scott, take our Dreamers out of limbo | Opinion

Benjie Pérez, founder of Purpose Church in Homestead writes:

"As a conservative, I believe in following the law, working hard and supporting businesses. As an evangelical pastor here in Florida, I also believe in compassion, empathy — and not punishing young people for circumstances beyond their control.

That’s why I, along with many in Florida’s Latino evangelical community, am urging senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott to support a DREAM Act in this lame-duck session that would finally give Florida’s tens of thousands of “Dreamers” — and the nation’s nearly 2 million of them — a pathway to citizenship in the country they love and have nearly always called home. Days ago, senators Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) laid out the framework for a bipartisan bill that would do just that, in exchange for strong border protections. Senators Rubio and Scott now have no reason not to get behind this bill.

...

This is all happening at a time when businesses are clamoring for more workers. If the Supreme Court declares the end of DACA before Congress gives certainty to these young people’s legal status, the economic impact will be devastating for all Floridians. The Florida Policy Institute [emphasis added] has calculated that Dreamers currently contribute almost $78 million in state and local taxes — and that if DACA protections end, Florida will lose $18.1 million in state and local tax revenues."
