Florida Could Gain More Health Care Coverage in 2017 with Medicaid Expansion

Florida is one of the 19 non-expansion states who would gain the most if it chose to expand Medicaid in 2017,  says a new report from the Urban Institute. This is noteworthy in light of the state’s current high uninsured rates and health insurance coverage gap.

Accordingly, if the state were to expand Medicaid in 2017:

  • 877,000 Floridians with annual income below 138 percent of the federal poverty level would benefit.
  • The state’s uninsured rate would fall from 15.2 percent (current uninsured rate of Florida) to 9.7 percent (assuming a high level of participation).
